The Magi knew when to expect the birth
of Jesus because Daniel foretold it
five hundred years earlier
The Jews therefore said to him: Thou art not yet fifty years old. And
hast thou seen Abraham? Jesus said to them: Amen, amen, I say to
you, before Abraham was made, I AM. 
Prophecy: The Messiah will be born of a virgin, in the city of Bethlehem
and a star will be a sign.  He will be a descendent of King David. Kings of
the east will bow down to Him and bring Him gifts. He will conquer sin and
death:
Micah 5:2  And thou Bethlehem Ephrata, art a little one among the
thousands of Juda, out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be
the ruler in Israel: and his going forth is from the beginning, from the
days of eternity.
Psalms 89:3 –4  I have made a covenant with my elect: I have sworn to
David my servant: Thy seed will I settle for ever. And I will build up thy
throne unto generation and generation.
Isaiah 7:14  Therefore the Lord himself shall give you a sign. Behold a
virgin shall conceive, and bear a son and his name shall be called
Emmanuel.
Numbers 24:17  I shall see him, but not
now: I shall behold him, but not near. A
STAR SHALL RISE out of Jacob and a
sceptre shall spring up from Israel: and
shall strike the chiefs of Moab, and shall
waste all the children of Seth 
Psalms 72:10  The kings of Tharsis and the
islands shall offer presents: the kings of
the Arabians and of Saba shall bring gifts: 
Isaiah 9:6  For a CHILD IS BORN to us, and
a son is given to us, and the government
is upon his shoulder: and his name shall
be called Wonderful, Counsellor, God the
Mighty, the Father of the world to come,
the Prince of Peace.
FULFILLMENT:
Luke 2:4 - 11  And Joseph also went up from Galilee, out of the city of
Nazareth, into Judea, to the city of David, which is called Bethlehem:
because he was of the house and family of David. To be enrolled with
Mary his espoused wife, who was with child.
And it came to pass that when they were there, her days were
accomplished that she should be delivered. And she brought forth her
first born son and wrapped him up in swaddling clothes and laid him in
a manger: because there was no room for them in the inn.
